Questions families ask
How does admissions work?
Visit first, then apply. Applications open in January and close in late February. A class teacher spends a morning with each child, and decisions go out in mid-March.
When are open houses and visits?
Open houses are in October and February. Visit days run most Wednesdays from October to April, and you can book one online.
Can we visit before applying?
Yes. A visit day is how almost every family begins: a morning in a class and a talk with the chair and a teacher.
What is a day like?
A teacher greets each child at the door. The first two hours are one main lesson, then music, lunch and a long time outdoors, then a craft or the garden. School ends at 2:45 p.m.
How does tuition work, and how do we ask about aid?
Tuition is set by the year and the school gives its figures at every visit. Financial aid is available, and the office explains how to apply.
Who is in charge?
The faculty, together. There is no head of school. A teacher serves as chair for a year and then another teacher takes the chair.
Why two grades in one class?
One class teacher can plan for the whole room, and each child is known by the same adult for two years. Older children help younger ones, and a child who is ready for more can reach for it.
What about lunch, clothing and phones?
Families send lunch. Children wear clothes for painting and gardening, with boots and a rain layer. Phones stay switched off in the backpack.
Is there care before or after school?
An extended afternoon runs until 4:30 p.m., four days a week. Families sign up by the month.
How does the school talk with families?
Each class teacher writes home every week, and parents meet with the faculty each term.
